SLAY was founded to expose Sri Lankan American youth to the culture of their heritage as well as to encourage Sri Lankan American youth to be active in democracy and pursue government careers. SLAY also hosts fundraisers to raise money for various important causes in Sri Lanka.

Shiyana Ruwan is a high school freshman. She is passionate about learning and social studies, especially cultural studies. She wants to pursue the highest level of education that she can, and is interested in studying law. Shiyana Ruwan is a high school freshman. She is passionate about learning and social studies, especially cultural studies. She wants to pursue the highest level of education that she can, and is interested in studying law. Shiyana founded SLAY because of her interest in politics and passion for government, specifically minority representation in government. In her free time, Shiyana enjoys ballet, reading, tennis, traveling, singing and dancing to Taylor Swift songs, and talking to her friends and family.
